Rotterdam Street Map in Fabric

2013.07.01

DSC 0296 2.jpg It was a bit of a surprise, when in early January 2013 I got an email from GROUP A architecture and interior design studios. The reason of their contact concerned my work Street Names Map. This project dated from 2011, and my first experiments at Piet Zwart Institute, and integrated geographical data from Open Street Map, but never took off the ground.

Coincidentally, the people at GROUP A had been looking for a fabric to refurbish chairs for new municipal offices in De Rotterdam, for which they have been doing the interior architecture. Chance, or perhaps google, has taken them to the Street Name Map website, and having liked what they saw, they were proposing me to collaborate with them. They were excited with the possibility of having the map of Rotterdam, simply drawn with its streets weaved on to a fabric that was going to cover the chairs in the new municipal offices. Since then we have been optimizing the map so it can be weaved on to the fabric, and both Rotterdam's streets' structure, as well the street names are perceptible. Soon the last tests will be coming out of the factory and won't be long until they are ready for the chairs. By then I will publish some pictures of the fabric.
